The Flow
You may have noticed that the ‘flow’ has been a bit north of Tahoe. The good news is that there have been consistent storm systems on the West Coast. What we need is for these systems to push south. It happens at the start of almost every ski season when one area gets pummeled early and the rest drool. Old Man Winter is simply putting a base down for this year’s highest-paying patrons (the Olympic Organizing Committee). But it looks as though he’s ready to start sharing the wealth starting next week. At the bottom of this site are weather links – click on ‘Jet Stream.’ When that yellow line slices through anything in northern California, we’re good. Starting this weekend and moving into next week when a Big Wet One is expected to suck the Pacific dry, that yellow line should start cutting right through our little nest up here so get ready….
Some Old Schooler rockin' Red Dog Corduroy, 12/2
Meantime, Ski Corp is offering $35 lift tickets through Friday. The Mountain Run snow guns are on and Red Dog has been spoiled rotten by the grooming crew. This morning I picked up a hitchhiker who turned out to be Squaw Freeride Team member Miles Clark who told me, “I was on rock-skis yesterday because I wasn’t sure about the snow. But today I have my regular skis because the coverage is so good.” And he’s right. Today I rode on that squeaky cold snow and it was really fun. Crisp air, solid coverage and fast snow always make for a good day. I saw Squaw icons Tom and Lizzy Day having what looked like a nice date day at the hill – if it’s good enough for them then it’s gotta be good enough for the rest of us (Tom = Squaw Freeride Teamer; skied in “License to Thrill” flick with S. Schmidt & Glen Plake; many other top-notch ski/video accomplishments).
Lower Mountain Run getting Fluffed, 12/2
Besides skiing, this is a great time get your partying and mingling skills warmed up. Thursday (12/3) is “In the Mood” – one of the best and longest-running prequels to every winter at Squaw. It’s a mix of still and video, hosted by longtime Squaw local and cancer-crusher Rob Frohlich who’s been skiing and ski writing in the Valley for decades. If you’re in town you must come to this. Admission is a voluntary donation of canned food for the Truckee Community Christmas. Saturday is the Retro Ski & Snowboard Dance at Sandy’s Pub at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Next weekend looks like it could not only be a powfest but it’s also the relaunch party for UnofficialSquaw.com with FREE BEER. Yes. FREE BEER at the Olympic Village Inn.
